Full Job Description

One of San Francisco’s historical dining treasures, the iconic Balboa Cafe, is seeking its next executive chef who is eager to pursue their culinary passion. PlumpJack Group’s Balboa Cafe is a popular neighborhood gathering place that also attracts the spirited traveler looking for a slice of San Francisco nostalgia. It’s known for its menu staples, like the famous Balboa Burger and the Wednesday Chicken Paillard, along with the much-anticipated seasonal offerings and daily specials. The Balboa exudes classic and refined style, while still being cheeky and fun for patrons that span generations.

Are you passionate about leading a back-of-the-house team, developing inspired seasonal menus, and excited to work closely with the front-of-the-house to create a remarkable dining experience? Balboa Cafe is seeking a talented chef who will lead with formidable communication skills, sound judgement, flexibility, and strong problem-solving skills. The Executive Chef will oversee our skilled kitchen team and menu development while working closely with the General Manager to execute a flawless dining and culinary experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • To understand and respond to all guest needs and requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • To hire, train, schedule, support, review, discipline and terminate employees directly accountable to his/her position, to maintain highest possible levels of employee morale and department productivity.
  • To coordinate with the General Manager to ensure the efficient and professional operation of the dining room.
  • To work with the General Manager and Sous Chef on the development and pricing of menus, safety and sanitation, staff development and product knowledge. Ensure all COVID-19 safety protocols are followed at all times.
  • Responsible for managing the ordering of all food products for the restaurant.
  • Monitor the presentation of all foods served to guests and ensure that appearance and quality are consistently maintained.
  • To prepare and post schedules for Kitchen staff on a weekly basis.
  • To properly document Personnel/Payroll transactions and payroll reports and prepare payroll for processing.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and quarterly safety meetings.
  • To ensure foods are stored and served at proper temperatures.
  • To maintain an adequate supply of all provisions in the kitchen and establish programs to minimize waste and pilferage.
  • To regularly inspect all kitchen areas to ensure sanitary conditions and report all needed equipment repairs.
  • To immediately report all suspicious occurrences and hazardous conditions and avoid injury to self and others.
  • Work with marketing and PR in promoting the restaurant and culinary offerings through various marketing channels and media outlets.
  • To perform other tasks, including cross-training, as directed.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret items such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write daily logs and managerial documentation. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. Bilingual abilities (spoken and/or written) in Spanish, preferred.
